    Association between subjective actual sleep duration, subjective sleep need, age, body mass index, and gender in a large sample of young adults

    Poor sleep is a major health concern, and there is evidence that young adults are at increased risk of suffering from poor sleep. There is also evidence that sleep duration can vary as a function of gender and body mass index (BMI). We sought to replicate these findings in a large sample of young adults, and also tested the hypothesis that a smaller gap between subjective sleep duration and subjective sleep need is associated with a greater feeling of being restored.; A total of 2,929 university students (mean age 23.24±3.13 years, 69.1% female) took part in an Internet-based survey. They answered questions related to demographics and subjective sleep patterns.; We found no gender differences in subjective sleep duration, subjective sleep need, BMI, age, or feeling of being restored. Nonlinear associations were observed between subjective sleep duration, BMI, and feeling of being restored. Moreover, a larger discrepancy between subjective actual sleep duration and subjective sleep need was associated with a lower feeling of being restored.; The present pattern of results from a large sample of young adults suggests that males and females do not differ with respect to subjective sleep duration, BMI, or feeling of being restored. Moreover, nonlinear correlations seemed to provide a more accurate reflection of the relationship between subjective sleep and demographic variables

    SummaryBackgroundSpirometry is used to diagnose chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). The Impulse oscillometry system (IOS) allows determination of respiratory impedance indices, which might be of potential value in early COPD, although previous experience is limited. We examined pulmonary resistance and reactance measured by IOS in subjects with or without self-reported chronic bronchitis or emphysema or COPD (Q+ or Q−) and subjects with or without COPD diagnosed according to the Global Initiative for Chronic Obstructive Lung Disease (GOLD) criteria (G+ or G−).MethodsFrom a previous population-based study 450 subjects were examined with spirometry and IOS and answered a questionnaire on respiratory symptoms and diseases.ResultsSeventy-seven subjects were Q+, of whom 34 also were G+. Q+/G− subjects (n = 43) reported respiratory symptoms more frequently (35–40% vs 8–14%) but had higher FEV1 (100% vs 87%) than Q−/G+ subjects (n = 90), p < 0.05 for both comparisons. Q+ subjects had higher pulmonary resistance and lower pulmonary reactance than Q− subjects (p < 0.01 for all comparisons). The same pattern was seen both in G+ subjects ((Q+/Q−) R5 0.39/0.32, R5–R20 0.10/0.07, X5 0.13/0.09, AX 0.55/0.27, p < 0.05 for all) and G− subjects ((Q+/Q−) R5 0.35/0.29, R5–R20 0.08/0.06, X5 0.10/0.08, AX 0.31/0.19 p < 0.05 for all) except for R20 (adjusted for gender and age).ConclusionsSelf-reported chronic bronchitis or emphysema or COPD was associated with higher pulmonary resistance and lower pulmonary reactance measured by IOS, both among subjects with and without COPD according to GOLD criteria. IOS may have the potential to detect pathology associated with COPD earlier than spirometry

    The prion gene is associated with human long-term memory

    Human cognitive processes are highly variable across individuals and are influenced by both genetic and environmental factors. Although genetic variations affect short-term memory in humans, it is unknown whether genetic variability has also an impact on long-term memory. Because prion-like conformational changes may be involved in the induction of long-lasting synaptic plasticity, we examined the impact of single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) of the prion protein gene (PRNP) on long-term memory in healthy young humans. SNPs in the genomic region of PRNP were associated with better long-term memory performance in two independent populations with different educational background. Among the examined PRNP SNPs, the common Met129Val polymorphism yielded the highest effect size. Twenty-four hours after a word list-learning task, carriers of either the 129MM or the 129MV genotype recalled 17% more information than 129VV carriers, but short-term memory was unaffected.     A 14-year prospective study of autonomic nerve function in Type 1 diabetic patients: association with nephropathy.

    Aims Prospective studies of autonomic nerve function are rare. We have followed the progression of autonomic dysfunction in relation to nephropathy over 14 years in Type 1 diabetic patients. Methods Autonomic nerve function was assessed by heart-rate responses to deep breathing (E/I ratio) and tilting (acceleration and brake indices) and by the postural blood pressure reaction in 58 patients, 43 of whom were reassessed after 14 years. Nephropathy was evaluated by the degree of albuminuria (albuminuria > 20 µg/min or > 0.03 g/24 h) and glomerular filtration rate (51Cr-EDTA plasma clearance). The acceleration index had deteriorated after 7 years (P = 0.0155), whereas the E/I ratio (P = 0.0070) and the diastolic postural blood pressure reaction (P = 0.0054) had deteriorated 14 years after the baseline examination (age-corrected values). All those with albuminuria at the third examination showed signs of autonomic neuropathy at baseline (10 of 10) compared with only nine of 22 without (P = 0.0016). Multiple regression analysis showed that the association between autonomic dysfunction and future albuminuria was due to the E/I ratio. In addition, individuals with an abnormal postural diastolic blood pressure fall (n = 7) at baseline showed a greater fall in glomerular filtration rate more than others 7-14 years later [29 (16.5) ml/min/1.72 m2 vs. 11 (9) ml/min/1.72 m2; P = 0.0074]. Conclusion Autonomic nerve function had deteriorated after 14 years.     Antibodies from a DNA peptide vaccination decrease the brain amyloid burden in a mouse model of Alzheimer's disease

    The neuropathology of Alzheimer's disease (AD) is characterized by the accumulation of amyloid peptide Aβ in the brain derived from proteolytic cleavage of the amyloid precursor protein (APP). Vaccination of mice with plasmid DNA coding for the human Aβ42 peptide together with low doses of preaggregated peptide induced antibodies with detectable titers after only 2weeks. One serum was directed against the four aminoterminal amino acids DAEF and differs from previously described ones. Both immune sera and monoclonal antibodies solubilized preformed aggregates of Aβ42 in vitro and recognized amyloid plaques in brain sections of mice transgenic for human APP. Passive immunization of transgenic AD mice caused a significant and rapid reduction in brain amyloid plaques within 24h. The combined DNA peptide vaccine may prove useful for active immunization with few inoculations and low peptide dose which may prevent the recently described inflammatory reactions in patients.     Speech Emotion Recognition Considering Local Dynamic Features

    Recently, increasing attention has been directed to the study of the speech emotion recognition, in which global acoustic features of an utterance are mostly used to eliminate the content differences. However, the expression of speech emotion is a dynamic process, which is reflected through dynamic durations, energies, and some other prosodic information when one speaks. In this paper, a novel local dynamic pitch probability distribution feature, which is obtained by drawing the histogram, is proposed to improve the accuracy of speech emotion recognition. Compared with most of the previous works using global features, the proposed method takes advantage of the local dynamic information conveyed by the emotional speech. Several experiments on Berlin Database of Emotional Speech are conducted to verify the effectiveness of the proposed method. The experimental results demonstrate that the local dynamic information obtained with the proposed method is more effective for speech emotion recognition than the traditional global features.Comment: 10 pages, 3 figures, accepted by ISSP 201

Specifically, streams of broadcast news transmissions, labeled based on the audio event, are decomposed using a large set of audio descriptors and project into the principal component space. A data-driven algorithm clusters the relevance of the components. The component subspaces are used by sound type classifier. This methodology showed that the k-nearest neighbor and the artificial intelligent network provide good results. Also, this methodology showed that discarding unnecessary dimension works in favor on the outcome, as it hardly deteriorates the effectiveness of the algorithms.Peer reviewe

    Lobar Dementia due to Extreme Widening of Virchow-Robin Spaces in One Hemisphere

    Widened perivascular spaces known as Virchow-Robin spaces (VRS) are often seen on MRI and are usually incidental findings. It is unclear if enlarged VRS can be associated with neurological deficits. In this report, we describe a case of lobar dementia associated with unusual VRS widening in one cerebral hemisphere. A 77-year-old woman, seen at a memory clinic, presented with progressive cognitive decline, left hemianopsia, and mild pyramidal signs on the left side. On MRI, unusually wide VRS were visible, predominantly in the right centrum semiovale and the right temporo-occipital white matter. The clinical syndrome was consistent with the extent and location of the abnormally dilated VRS. The high MR signal in white matter bridges between the VRS suggested parenchymal damage, possibly representing gliotic white matter. No evidence for another etiology was found on cerebral MRI and rCBF SPECT. As a conclusion, enlarged VRS in one cerebral hemisphere may be associated with cognitive change and neurological deficits
